I want to suggest a Christmas present with real legs that I think most readers would appreciate — this holiday, in the name of whoever the gift is intended for, donate a book to the Camel Bookmobile in Northeastern Kenya near the troubled border with Somalia. The camel library began operating in 1996 in a region of semi-nomads where the illiteracy rate at that time was said to be 85 percent. The bookmobile travels about two to three hours each way to carry books on the back of camels through the African bush completely devoid of infrastructure, stopping at one-room schoolhouses that dot this region. The books are laid out on grass mats beneath acacia trees. I’ve traveled with the camel bookmobile so can tell you the books are most welcome, AND very needed. More details on the camel book drive website: http://www.camelbookdrive.wordpress.com. The gift of a book always keeps giving, and in this case, it is also a way to create a link to the people of this region. THANK YOU for considering this for a possible Holiday Shopping Guide gift.
Best, masha
